Updating Miui
Miui is an excellent custom Android ROM. They come out with weekly updates, and I specifically get all mine from miuiandroid.com. It’s surprisingly easy to upgrade your phone to the latest version, and even a novice can perform the upgrade (Yes, even if you got somebody else to put Miui onto your phone initially)!
Before we begin, a few things:
- This upgrade is non-destructive, you shouldn’t lose your data or game-progress
- If you run into issues, you can always go back to a previous version
- If programs are force-closing on you, make sure you’re running the default theme and try again, as themes quite often cause instability
- Upgrading is actually really quite easy, and usually only takes about 2 minutes
- You must ALREADY be running Miui
Right, now lets get upgarding!
To start with, you’re going to need to go to http://www.miuiandroid.com and click on “Roms” up the top. Choose the ROM for your phone, in my case it’s the Samsung Galaxy S (i9000).
Because Miui initially comes from China, the ROM is in Chinese, so there’s two parts to it: The main ROM, and the English language pack. Grab both.
Save them to your computer, then copy them across to your phone. Don’t bother putting them into any folder, just straight onto your phone / SD Card.
Now if this is the first time you’ve upgraded MIUI, download “ROM Manager” from the Android Market. This is a free download. You won’t need to re-download it every time, just this once.
Once in, fire it up, and choose the second option from the top “Reboot into Recovery”.
This will shut down your phone and put it in to “Recovery Mode”. Don’t worry, it’s not as evil as it sounds.
Now, you should be in Recovery Mode, here’s all you need to know about Recovery Mode:
- Volume Up will move the selection Up
- Volume Down will move the selection Down
- Power will choose the current selection (Think of it like the “Enter” key)
So, choose the 5th from the top “install zip from sdcard”
Now, select “choose zip from sdcard”
Scroll right the way to the bottom and select the .zip files. If you can’t see them, check in the “external_sd” folder.
You want to flash the one labelled something along the lines of:Â miuiandroid-I9000-1.5.20.zip
This is the main ROM. It’s named “miui”, followed by the phone model (i9000 in my case), followed by the version (Date-based).
After this, you want to go back through the same process, but this time flash the English language pack. This will be labelled something like:Â miuiandroid-1.5.20_I9000-EN-PACK1b_2.3.4
NOTE: The dates of both the ROM and the Language Pack must match up.
Sometimes there’s another ‘fixup’ release of the language pack, in which case it’ll be labelled “1b” or “1c” for example. This is fine, nothing to worry about.
Once you’ve flashed both the ROM and the Language pack, choose “*****Go Back*****” and then “reboot system now”.
That’s it, you’re all upgraded, there’s nothing more for you to do but sit back and wait for the phone to reboot. It’ll probably take a bit longer than it usually does, but that’s fine, it’s always slower to boot the first time after flashing an upgrade.
That was pretty painless, wasn’t it?
If this has helped you in any way, please leave me a brief note, say hi, or give me any other feedback.
Cheers
Chill.
Thanks! Great guide
Can I use the same procedure if I am using the XDA rom? Either if I am upgrading the a new XDA rom or to a the official rom.
Yes, same procedure works for MCG which is available via XDA 🙂
I think you forgot about wiping Dalvik cache or wiping cache for a new flash 😛
Yes, good point, though I’m hoping to keep it as *simple* as possible. Going between minor versions, the dalvik cache isn’t as likely to require a wipe vs a change of ROM editions (Such as from stock to MIUI). Last two times I gave somebody instructions to do that, they ended up doing a factory reset because they did it wrong. Hopefully by not telling them to wipe anything, they’ll be fine. If they’re just going up and down between versions of MIUI they should be OK for the better part. If not, then they can post and ask in the Forums 😉 Part of my grand scheme, giving half-baked advice so that everybody goes to the forums, and I can bump my post count up. Not really, but it sounded funny :p
Hi,
Can you please explain to me how to wipe Dalvik? when I go to “Recovery mode” I can’t see any Wipe Dalvik…
Thanks!
Awesome stuff dude! Have been referring to this post every time I update! Your the man!!
Glad I could help!
